Like it or not, accept it or not, you carry an atmosphere. Whatever is going on inside will eventually make its way out and follow you around like a fragrance, or something else!
The great news is that we are entirely able to create atmospheres that are life-giving, not only to us but also to anyone who enters our sphere of influence.
Sit for a moment and consider the atmosphere you are carrying, projecting and marinating in at this moment. Are you stressed? Are you worried about money, work or relationships? Are you at peace?
We may think that we have our internal world under good order and control, but here’s the rub.
We are not the best judges of our atmosphere!
I discovered this…rather painfully…some years ago after recognising that there needed to be an atmosphere change at home.
After many years of intermittent turbulence in our family home I decided to create a space where it was possible to interact, agree, disagree and not feel as though the world was coming to an end. I had been considering the fact that in the right atmosphere anything is possible and in the wrong atmosphere nothing works.
After much soul searching and considered thought, I began a discussion with my wife Fran around the atmosphere in our home. That is until she stopped me in my tracks with,
“The atmosphere is fine until you walk in the door!”
I must admit it floored me. I thought my atmosphere was OK. I had been living quite comfortably in it for years. There were times when I’d come home a little frustrated; there were times when I’d arrive home passionate about what I was doing at work. Admittedly there were a few times I’d come home angry, but I’d never connected those aspects with the atmosphere that I was inflicting on my family. It simply never crossed my mind!
Fran’s words that day made me realise that I needed to address my atmosphere. When I walked through the door, I was carrying a negative atmosphere, and if I was to bring a more positive energy into the home, I needed to be proactive.
What I learnt that day was this:
The key to taking charge of our atmosphere is to acknowledge and own our internal world.
Until we do this, we are unable to alter or influence the atmosphere that others are experiencing in our presence.
