Are you tired? Are you worn out all the time? Is there never enough time? Does breathing feel like one more thing you have to do? In essence, are you a human being or a human doing? Yes, I know it’s a clichéd saying, but there is a universal truth at the core.
When our doing flows from our being, there is ease and energy. However, when our doing supplants our being there is dis-ease, and our strength evaporates.
Maybe a better set of questions is, "Do you know who you are?" "Are you comfortable in your skin?" "Do you love yourself and are you able to give love?" In other words, are you able to completely BE you and allow others to BE themselves?
One of the most significant gifts God has given every human being is the gift to be us freely. To just BE, free from the expectations of others.
The ability to BE and to DO from that place of utter acceptance is bound to our unique identity in God. When we know who we are, our originality as ones who bear the image of our creator and each display a distinct aspect of His nature and character, it becomes more natural to BE first and DO second.
The writer of Psalm 139 summed it up beautifully:
Psalm 139:13-16 (MSG)
Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; You formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvellously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
You know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit-by-bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.
So, if you want to know if you are a human being or a human doing, stop for a few minutes, sit and recognise the state of your being.
